Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery, Lava
Located just 500 meters from the Lava Jeep Stand, Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery is a serene Buddhist monastery nestled in the beautiful Himalayan hamlet of Lava, Popularly known as the Lava Monastery, it is one of the must-visit attractions in the region.
Established in 1987 by the third Kongtrul Rinpoche, Karma Lodro Chokyi Senge, the monastery was built on a generous three-acre land donation from the local Buddhist community. Initially home to just a handful of monks, the monastery has grown over the years and now houses more than 110 resident monks. The fourth Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche currently studies and trains here, and visitors can often see monks engaged in the rigorous study of Buddhist scriptures and deep meditation.
Designed in traditional Tibetan architectural style, the monastery features prayer halls, manicured lawns, peaceful sitting areas, and a magnificent Buddha statue. It also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including sights of Aritar in Sikkim and the historic Jelep La pass. Just outside the monastery gates, a lively market buzzes with hotels, eateries, and shops selling clothing, souvenirs, and local handicrafts, making it a vibrant spot to explore after your visit.
