Sangchen Dorjee Monastery

2 km from Pedong Bus Stand, Kalimpong District, West Bengal

Sangchen Dorjee Monastery, popularly known as Pedong Monastery, is one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in the Kalimpong district. Located just 2 km from the Pedong Bus Stand, this ancient Bhutanese monastery stands as a living testimony to the region’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage.

Historical Significance

Established in the early 1700s AD during the Bhutanese rule, the monastery holds immense cultural and historical importance. Following the destruction of Damsang Fort during the Anglo-Bhutanese War in 1864, many of its sacred valuables were transferred to this monastery for safekeeping.

Architectural Beauty

The monastery is renowned for its Bhutanese-style architecture and intricate fresco paintings inside the main chamber. These murals vividly depict themes of Tantric Buddhism, offering visitors a glimpse into spiritual symbolism and Himalayan artistry.

Spiritual Importance

A key pilgrimage site for followers of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition of Buddhism, the monastery is also known for housing the mummified body of the last Shabdrung Rinpoche, one of Bhutan’s most revered spiritual leaders.

Cultural Festivity

Every year during April–May, the monastery hosts the vibrant Cham Dance (Mask Dance)—a spiritual ritual celebrated with great devotion, traditional costumes, and elaborate masks.
